Summer Break!

It has been a wonderful year in first grade!  We learned so many new things and prepared ourselves for second grade.  Now it is time to relax and have a fun summer break.  When you are ready to prepare for the new school year, I have included the supply list for next school year.


SECOND GRADE
3 Spiral notebooks wide-ruled                                                          1 Pair scissors
13 Pencils (to start – 1 for art)                                                          4 Glue sticks (to start – replacements needed)
1 Pencil box                                                                                          3 two pocket folders
Erasers (pencil caps, one big eraser)                                               1 package wide ruled notebook paper

Work on Writing



During Work on Writing some students worked with a partner to put together writing projects. These students researched planets and used Shadow Puppet to report about what they learned.

Creating Our Own Business



During our last session of Junior Achievement the students were asked to create a business that sold cakes,  They had to design their own cakes, decide on a name, and agree to where this business would be located.

We practiced for our Spring program in the gym.  Everyone did a nice job with performing!

Fourth Grade Buddies



Our fourth grade buddies performed for us on Friday.  They read reader's theater scripts two stories for us.

Reader's Theater






During University this week some students practiced a reader's theater script.  We performed for the rest of the first grade and Mr. Pine.  We were super excited and enjoyed performing for others.

Junior Achievement



We learned that our community has lots of places that we can visit to get our wants and needs.  We looked at pictures and decided where we might find the things in the community.  We named stores and places that we can visit in our community.



Working with Fractions

         



The students learned that fractions are part of a whole.  Fractions are used when you cook or use a recipe.  They completed a fraction book to show the different fractions we use.

Earth Day

                                                   

All students made an Earth Day Promise.  We learned about how important it is to do things to help the Earth.  We discussed recycling, reusing things, and reducing what we use every day.

Junior Achievement

                                                    

Today for Junior Achievement the students discussed jobs that are available in our community.  They played a game similar to Headbands.  One student would hold up a card with a job on it.  The student could not look at the card.  The remaining students gave clues about the job.  The student holding the card was then asked to guess the job.  The next activity had them drawing a job or a chore they could do at home,

REMC Presentation



A representative from REMC came in to talk to us about being safe around electricity.  We learned that there are many ways to be careful both in our house and outside.  Electricity can be dangerous and can hurt us if we are not careful.

Animal Habitats


Mrs. Munk visited us to teach us about animal habitats.  We learned what animals do to survive in their habitats and what adaptations they have to help them with survival.  The students drew the habitat for the animals they were given.

More with Kahoot

The students had a lot of fun reviewing for their math test.  We played Kahoot.  The students were given a question and had to answer as quickly as possible using their iPads.  They definitely learned to answer carefully and quickly!

The Zoomobile Visits



The zoo came for a visit to teach us about animals.  We learned about bats, butterflies, and other winged animals.  We learned how they adapt to their habitats.

Science With Mrs. Munk




Mrs. Munk came to our class to teach us about dirt for science.  We found out that it is very important to us and plants.  We were able to use a magnifying glass to study what dirt looks like up close.  She also read an interesting book called Digging on Dirt by Rena Korb.

This week we studied contractions.  We learned that two words make up contractions.  Everyone became a contraction surgeon and made a contraction.

Jump Rope Team

On Friday the jump rope team from Churbusco came to visit and show us their skills with the jump ropes.  This was part of our Character Counts Convocation and helped us gear up for Jump Rope for Heart.

All About Penguins




The students have been researching information about penguins.  They are using the information to write an All About Penguins book.  They have been learning about the genre of nonfiction and the text features included in this genre.

Book Reviews using Shadow Puppet


The students have started to learn about book reviews.  They are reading books of their choice and then talking about one of the books.  They each pick a book they have read and talk about specific parts.  They introduce themselves, tell what book they read, give the beginning, middle, and end then finish with their opinion of the book.  This is a student's book review using the app Shadow Puppet.

Zippy, Our Elf on the Shelf


This was Zippy our Elf on a Shelf.  He had lots of fun surprising us with all of his antics before Christmas.  He is now back at the North Pole, but is always watching.

Miss Limberlost Visits


Miss Limberlost came in on Monday to help us learn more about Martin Luther King, Jr.  She taught us about his life, his accomplishments, and his dreams.  We learned that he was very important with communicating to need for civil rights for all people.

Polar Express Day Celebration


We celebrated Polar Express Day before break.  We also received goodie bags from the North Pole. Santa's elves sent letters and treats for each of us!  It was very exciting!!
